In Stockton, several disadvantaged communities faced unsafe conditions along school routes due to sidewalk gaps, inadequate curb ramps, and deficient crosswalks, leading students to walk in hazardous environments such as streets, shoulders, or dirt paths. To address this problem, R.E.Y. worked with the City of Stockton to prepare an Active Transportation Program (ATP) Cycle 4 grant application for the proposed project to construct curb, gutter, and sidewalks to close gaps near five schools, while also evaluating and installing new facilities where curb ramps and crosswalks were lacking. This project was aimed at enhancing safety for students with features like five-foot-wide sidewalks, bulb-outs, pedestrian lighting, school signage, ADA-compliant curb ramps, pedestrian gates, and high-visibility crosswalks. R.E.Y. services included project management, data gathering, soliciting letters of support from the community, and preparation of the engineering exhibits, estimates, and draft and final grant applications. The application received a score of 93 and the project was awarded $2.8M in funds in 2019.  R.E.Y. was later selected by the City to perform PS&E for the project.
